In 2019 we were appointed to look into the possibility of designing a modern extension to a prominent building within Letchworth Garden City. The building fell in the jurisdiction of the Letchworth Heritage Foundation, so we also had to consult with their design panel to gain foundation approval as well as local Authority approval.
After looking at various options we settled on a simple design that consisted of a flat box made with only 2 materials, glass and zinc cladding, to keep the extension deliberately modern against the backdrop of a complicated and highly detailed existing house. To appease the Heritage Foundation, we dropped the internal floor level to create the head height the clients wanted within the space. While originally concerned what this change might do with the budget, we were pleased that this was introduced as it provides the wow factor of the room as you transition from the kitchen space into the new lounge space.
